Lunt Roman Fort Outreach

For schools who missed the Lunt season, we can bring the drama and action of the Roman army to you! A fully-costumed soldier will bring the Lunt’s story to life through a physically interactive Probatio - a Roman soldier’s boot camp! Pupils will learn to march and follow Latin commands, wield foam swords, hurl javelins and form the famous Testudo (tortoise) shield formation. They will also try their hand at playing Harpastum – a fun and energetic ball game played throughout the Roman Empire.

Teacher Notes

• Groups of 32 pupils maximum

• Coventry schools only

• Available from 6 January 2020 until 21 February 2020

• All materials provided

• A large room (such as a gym or hall) required for the session

• Two school staff per session required

Learning Outcomes

Your pupils will: 

• Increase their historical awareness

• Improve teamwork skills through physical activity

• Listen and respond appropriately to adults and their peers

• Increase vocabulary through following commands

• Experience history coming to life through active participation

Curriculum links 

• History – pupils will learn more about the Roman Empire and its impact on Britain, and gain understanding of the life of a soldier

• PE – pupils will engage in physical activity, take part in activity challenges as part of a team, and learn more about games and exercise in the ancient world
